Instant Data Scraper is one of the best-known free extensions for pulling data off web pages. If you are reading this, you have probably used it and are looking for something to add or switch to. Let's look at it calmly: what it does well, where it may fall short, and when Grabsavo is the better fit — and when it is not.
We make Grabsavo, so we have a stake in this. To keep the comparison checkable, everything we say about Instant Data Scraper comes from its Chrome Web Store listing, not from our own tests or hearsay.
What Instant Data Scraper does well
According to its store listing, the extension:
- detects data on the page automatically, using heuristic analysis of the HTML;
- detects when dynamic data has finished loading;
- lets you set the delay and maximum wait time;
- supports pagination by navigating to the next page via buttons or links;
- supports infinite scrolling;
- shows a preview you can copy from;
- exports to Excel and CSV;
- lets you rename and filter columns.
And it is completely free; the developer states that scraped data stays in your browser.
For a typical "open the results, click, get a CSV" task, that is enough. If you collect a few hundred rows a month and you are happy, there is no reason to switch.
Where users run into limits
Below are scenarios where a simple scraper often is not enough. Similar themes come up in user reviews in the store; we do not quote them or judge how common they are. Points 1 and 2 were checked against the extension's listing:
- You need data from item pages. The list has the name and price; specs, brand or address are on each item's own page. Visiting item pages is not mentioned in the Instant Data Scraper listing.
- You repeat the job. Rebuilding the selection every time is tedious if you check the same catalog weekly. Saved setups and scheduled runs are not mentioned in the listing.
- Unusual pagination. Scrolling inside a separate panel, a "Show more" button, page numbers in the URL — every site does it differently.
- The data needs cleaning. Prices as text, mixed date formats, stray spaces — all fixed by hand in Excel afterwards.
- You need another format. JSON, or a direct export to Google Sheets.

A few of these in more detail.
Five kinds of pagination, polite delays
Grabsavo can click "Next", put the page number into the URL (?page=N, /page/N), scroll the page or a single block, and click "Show more". It waits a random 2–4 seconds between pages by default and stops when two pages in a row bring no new rows. If the browser closes mid-run, you confirm after restart and Grabsavo continues from the saved page.
Quality report
After each run you see pages and rows collected, duplicates removed, columns with many empty values, and similar elements on the page that were not collected. It helps you notice that the selection skipped items with a different layout.
Item-page details (Pro)
Pick the link column; Grabsavo opens the first item page and suggests fields — schema.org data and spec-table rows like "Brand" or "Power". Tick what you need, and it visits every link, at most two at a time. Per-item errors go into a _status column.
Cleaning
"Trim extra spaces", numbers, "Price → number and currency", "Dates → YYYY-MM-DD", remove duplicates, filter rows, replace text (plain or regex), computed columns like {Price} * 2, split and merge columns. Steps are saved and re-applied.
Templates and schedule (Pro)
Save the setup for a site as a template and share it as a link. Scheduled runs — every hour, 6, 12 or 24 hours, or weekly — work while the browser is open. Each result is compared with the previous run: new, changed and gone rows.
AI assistant (Pro)
Describe what to collect in plain words, e.g. "name, price, rating, link". The assistant builds the columns from a cleaned sample of 2–3 list items (no form values). The scraping itself stays local. The limit is 200 requests a month.
Where Grabsavo falls short
To be fair:
- Free-tier limits. Free means up to 10 pages and 500 rows per run, with CSV and clipboard export. Instant Data Scraper is free in full. If all you need is plain bulk collection at no cost, that is a strong argument for it.
- A new product. Grabsavo is just launching and has no track record or store reviews yet.
- No bypassing protections. No proxies, no captcha solving, no getting around sign-ins or paywalls. If that is what you need, Grabsavo is not for you.
How to decide
- One-off collection from one results page, CSV is fine — Instant Data Scraper will do.
- You need specs from item pages, regular monitoring, tricky pagination, or clean data out of the box — look at Grabsavo.
You can use both; the extensions do not interfere with each other.
If you decide to try Grabsavo
Switching takes a couple of minutes: install the extension, open the page you scraped before and click the icon. Compare which columns were found automatically and check the quality report — it shows whether either tool missed part of the list. For recurring jobs, save the setup as a template.
Try it
The quickest way to compare is to collect the same list with both tools. Our demo catalog with every kind of pagination is a good place for that. Install Grabsavo from /install — 7 days of Pro free, no card. Prices are on /pricing.
